![]() ![]() ![]() A container holds the video and audio stream, and any included subtitles. All video files are comprised of four main parts: 1. Let's look at how a media file (I am mainly talking about video files) is comprised and how Plex would deal with specific files when streaming to a client.Įach video file that is stored on your hard drive is not just a simple file with the video and audio joined together. If you do rip your Blu-ray movies to play on Plex, understanding your media files becomes even more important. Understanding which media files won't play, and why they won't play on a particular client is important when managing a Plex server. When it comes to video files, there are certain aspects of how a media file is encoded that could impact how Plex sends the file to a client.Įvery client that is supported by Plex may not be able to natively play a particular media file without some help from the Plex server. ![]() Your Plex Media Server can play pretty much any media file format you can add to it, except for image formats. ![]() I haven’t had a single issue with this setup, even for multiple 4K streams, though I had tons of playback problems on various devices beforehand. With Plex, understanding the difference between direct play, direct stream, and transcoding can make all the difference to the enjoyment of the movies that are streamed from your Plex server. I use tdarr to automatically create the downmixed audio. My setup now uses a gpu to transcode my library which is all h265, and then there’s a default stereo audio track for everything which will always be streamable. If you have some h265 with stereo audio from a commentary track or it’s just an older movie, you can try to play that back and see if it works. The thing that makes it so the devices will play it back flawlessly is either to lower the quality (and then plex will transcode the audio so it plays fine), or to downmix an aac stereo track which pretty much has universal no issues playback. Not saying this is specifically your problem, but I’ll note that for whatever reason, I often have playback problems with h265 because the audio is a higher quality than my device likes (from chrome, chromecast, iPad, etc.). Tl:dr - Looks like any modern encoding of H.265 on the Chromecast Ultra is going to have a hard time. Which was phased out for Version 2 after July 2014. So, if you were encoding H.265 videos, this device will only support Version 1 profiles. Something to note here in regards to H.265 encoding is that the device supports, "HEVC / H.265 Main and Main10 Profiles up to level 5.1 (2160p/60fps)". Per the Chromecast support page of Supported Media for Google Cast, there is a display of media containers and video codecs for each version of the device, including my Ultra. Just not looking to waste money here if possible.īeen continuing the journey here to find answers and I think I've made some significant progress and wanted to share. Is it something with the Chromecast Ultra instead? I've read that the Chromecast should be able to handle H265 media, but then again some of the H264 re-encodes that I've done have given me the 'h4 encode' error within Plex as well. I figured my Xeons would have been fine for 1 1080p stream since that's all I'm asking for at the moment. I do have a 1050TI in the server and will gladly pay for the lifetime Plex Pass if this will fix the issues by switching to hardware decodes, but if this persists then I'm going to find another solution. The server does hover around 45% usage while CPU transcoding ( image) for both instances of media playback. Watching the same movie now on my main desktop computer results in no issues whatsoever. This doesn't happen automatically, has to be done manually via my Android Plex app. The only solution at the moment is to downscale the quality to 720p for every title we watch. Casting 1080p, H265 media results in massive frame skipping throughout the entire film. Except getting H265 streams played to my Chromcast Ultra (firmware version: 86) via either Wifi (tried both 2.4 & 5Ghz bands) and Cat 6A ethernet direct. I custom built a Xeon E5-2670, dual socket rig with 32 total threads on a SuperMicro X9DR3-F board and this is my first big experience using Unraid for doing almost everything I could ever ask for. I've really been trying to look everywhere for this answer, but I cannot find a solution so I'm hoping there's a glimmer of hope here. ![]()
